The Summer Of The Beautiful White Horse Analysis
The short story "The Summer of The Beautiful White Horse" by William Saroyan is about two boys named Mourad and Aram that live in the San Juoquin Valley on Walnut Street. In the setting, at four in the morning Mourad comes to Arams room. Mourad stole a white horse and takes it for six months. Mourad shows his cousin Aram the horse and teaches him to ride it. Afterword's, when they returned it, the owner was very happy. Saroyan shows no official dialogue because she didn't want to focus on that because she mainly talk in the first person point of view. She did focus on the setting because she says lots of info about the time and place. Saroyan said "That year we lived at the edge of town, on Walnut Ave" which explains where they lived. In the short story, Aram says they are poor but they are still happy for what they have, so the mood isn't negative but positive. Saroyan also used the characters Aram and Mourad because she wanted them to have their secret. This makes the story more interesting to not want to stop reading because if they stole the horse, maybe they can get away with it or they can get caught and it would have a plot twist. The word choice makes the book fun because it tells us words like "honesty" and "steal". Because Mourad stole the horse, they weren't being honest and aren't loyal, they are being the exact opposite for what they're family and the people know them for.
