Dear, Ms.Stronks
Our class is learning about Shirley Jackson and her life of what she has done and much more. I
have lots of facts to tell you but right now I would like to explain when she was young. Shirley
Jackson was bon in San Francisco on December 14, 1916 and spent her childhood growing nearby
Burlingame California. As she grew up, she started to write novels and short stories. When she was
17, her family moved to the East and Shirley attended the University of Rochester. She withdrew
and studied at home for a year writing a minimum of 1,000 words per day, Did you know she liked
to write as a hobby? She wrote many books and stories like "The Haunting in The Hills" Or "The
Sundial" soon she also married a man named Stanley Hyman who also writes.
She published a famous book called 'The Lottery' in 1948 and a fact about it is that it shocked
America and many people canceled their subscriptions and sent hate mail to her. A fact is that
many people said negative things about it. Another fact about the 1948 book was that it centers
around a small town in America with a population of 300 and the winner in the final round gets to
be stoned to death! That is what happened in 1948. Then when she died, she either died of a heart
failure or other problems. I hope this is informational in many parts of her life.
